What’s changing from April 2026?
If you’re a landlord or sole trader with qualifying income, HMRC has introduced Making Tax Digital for Income Tax and you must comply from 6 April 2026.
If you’re affected, you need to:
- Keep digital records of income and expenses
- Submit quarterly income tax updates to HMRC
- Use HMRC‑recognised software
- Submit an annual Final Declaration

MTD for Income Tax is being introduced in stages:
- April 2026 – over £50,000
- April 2027 – over £30,000
- April 2028 – over £20,000
You can also choose to opt in to MTD for Income Tax voluntarily before it becomes mandatory for you.
